Mickey Has Egg on His Face. (Don’t let this happen to you)

So back on June 20th if you tried to log on to Disney's very popular website Club Penguin (interactive site for kids) you landed on a domain renewal page. That's right, they FORGOT to renew the domain!

Or last fall when the giant Australian retailer Wesfarmers owner of the major hardware chain Bunnings forgot to renew 'hardware.com.au'. That's right, they FORGOT to renew it.  Their competitor Woolworths bought the domain name for $33,333. Woolworths is planning to enter into the $36 billion Australian hardware market and obviously sees the value in having such a premium domain name.

What can you do to insure this doesn't happen?

Have a system in place for renewing your domain names regularly. The easiest way to lose a domain name is simply failing to renew it in time. A renewal process can be as simple as scheduling a recurring renewal reminder in calendar to warn you a month before each of your domains is due to expire. Many registrars now allow you to synchronize domains so that they expire on the same date, making it much easier to manage more than one.

Registrar Lock. Most registrars offer a service called Registrar Lock (sometimes called Domain Lock or Transfer Lock,) this can prevent your domain from being accidentally or illegally transferred without your permission.
